Join WalkArlington and Friends of Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium

for a full-moon walk led by Jennifer Bartlett, a professional astronomer with the U.S. Naval Academy and an Arlington resident.

Departing from the ranger station in Bluemont Park, Dr. Bartlett will lead us on an out-and-back walk along the Washington & Old Dominion Trail as we observe the sun setting and the full moon rising. She will explain the diminishing light as we pass through twilight and tell us a bit about how the moon waxes and wanes through its different phases. By the end of the walk, the moon will have fully risen and we will be able to look at craters and other features with binoculars under Dr. Bartlett’s guidance.

Dr. Bartlett will happily target portions of this walk and her explanations to children, so kids are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Note: There are TWO sessions of this walk, one that starts at 5:30 p.m. and one that starts at 7:30 p.m. When you register, please choose which instance you would like to attend.

What to bring: WalkArlington will provide lanterns and flashlights since we will be walking in the dark. If you have your own flashlights, feel free to bring them. Friends of Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium can loan some binoculars, but you are also encouraged to bring your own. WalkArlington will also provide free hot beverages (tea, hot chocolate) you can take with you as we embark on this winter walk.

Getting there: The exact meetup point is at the Bluemont Park Ranger Station near the tennis courts. Bluemont Park is located at 601 N. Manchester St., about 1 ½ miles from the Ballston Metro. You can take Metro, bus, or use active transportation (walking, biking, bikeshare) to get to this walk. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to the park from the Ballston Metro. After our walk, we’ll return to the park to have hot drinks and classic doughnuts courtesy of Good Company Doughnuts & Café before heading back to the office.

Join WalkArlington for a photowalk in Rosslyn with Photographer Angela B. Pan. We’ll explore this vibrant urban neighborhood and some interesting spots nearby while Angela guides us on taking better photos with our cell phones.
Voted “Best Visual Artist in Washington, D.C.” by the Washington City Paper two years in a row, Angela B. Pan has had her images of Washington, D.C., published in the Washington Post, The White House Historical Association, and more. Her work has been featured in local galleries and publications of Apple, Lionsgate, and several luxury hotels. WalkArlington presents a summer series of walk and learn opportunities to engage with some of Arlington’s experts and cool people.

On this walk, Dan Nabors, transportation engineer, will demonstrate how planning and engineering influence your everyday experience and enjoyment of sidewalks, land use, and street connectivity.

Dan Nabors is the Assistant Bureau Chief for Arlington County’s Transportation Engineering and Operations Bureau and a dynamic speaker who explains complex topics simply and clearly (we’ve seen him in action before!) so come ready to have fun and learn. He’ll be joined by staff from the Rosslyn Business Improvement District (BID), who have collaborated with him on several recent projects.

WalkArlington in partnership with Columbia Pike Partnership and the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington presents Juneteenth Black Heritage Walk.

Discover Black history in Arlington on a walk to honor Juneteenth led by Craig Syphax, a board member and former president of the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington and a member of the well-known Syphax family.
This 1 hour and 30-minute walk will take place along the Pike and will include a guided walk with stops at St. John’s Baptist Church, Freedman’s Village Bridge, and more. Along the route, Craig will discuss the history of some of these significant sites, in addition to his family’s deep-rooted history in and around Arlington. The walk will end at Pike Park to enjoy musician Rick Franklin performing roots music at the farmers market.
