Arlington offers many opportunities to get involved as a member of this community. In fact, Arlington has something of a region-wide reputation for the high level of involvement of our citizens in public affairs.

There are close to 50 permanent advisory groups in the County, and about 15 task forces operating at any given moment. A full listing of Arlington's citizen groups is available on the County website.

If you are interested in guiding the future of WALKArlington or working on revisions to the Pedestrian Transportation plan, among other important issues: consider joining the Pedestrian Advisory Committee which meets six times a year.

Other advisory groups that might interest you include: Commission on Aging; Commission for the Arts; Bicycle Advisory Committee; Disability Advisory Commission; Economic Development Commission; Environment and Energy Conservation Commission; Fiscal Affairs Advisory Commission; Health Center Commission; Neighborhood Conservation Advisory Committee; Neighborhood Traffic Calming Committee; Park and Recreation Commission; Planning Commission; Transportation Commission and the Urban Forestry Commission.

Civic and Citizens Associations

Want to join with your neighbors in having your voice heard? Arlington has a vibrant collection of civic/citizens associations; a complete, current list of these is also available on the County's website.

Schools

WALKArlington works with Arlington County schools interested in participating in Walk & Bike to School Day each October. In 2006, Ashlawn Elementary School set the pace for Arlington students.

Arlington Community and Civic Organizations

Here is just a sampling of some of local organizations whose mission is "in sync" with WALKArlington's.

Neighborhood Conservation

An "in Arlington-only" way of getting involved in the community, "NC" as it is widely known empowers citizens by inviting them to create neighborhood plans. In return for their efforts, funding for specific projects (such as sidewalks, curbs and gutters; wayfinding signage; park and playground improvements and more) may be made available.
