Gear Up!
Many of us balk at the idea of "gearing up" for walking. After all, haven't we been walking with precious few accoutrements since we were small?
Yes – but think about it! When walking is one of your main modes of exercise, you need to insure your comfort and safety so you can keep on walking far into your future. Plain and simple: that is what having the right gear is about.
Proper Shoes
Sure, some folks walk barefoot. But we don't suggest you make a habit of this -- especially not in urban Arlington! Shoes designed for walking will go a long, LONG way in keeping your feet and legs happy while you walk. How and where to find and buy the right shoe? Check out our shoe guide.
Clothing
While you could go walking in just about anything, take a look at our guide to clothing -- for all types of weather - that may make walking more enjoyable.
Pedometers
Pedometers are a great way to motivate yourself, and to track your progress in walking! These fun and inexpensive little gadgets count the number of steps you take. If you decide to invest a little bit more money, you can get a multi-functional pedometer. Find out which type of device best suits your needs in our guide to pedometers.
Backpacks
Backpacks are the best bags to use while walking if you are going to carry things with you. They keep your hands free and are ultimately more comfortable than a one-shoulder bag, purse, or a fanny pack. Carry a backpack that is the right size for what you'll be carrying. Don't overload a smaller bag -- this will become uncomfortable overtime while walking. Under-filling a bigger bag is unnecessary. It may be wise to have a bigger bag for cooler weather when you will be wearing multiple layers that you may take off and a smaller bag for warmer weather when you'll be wearing fewer layers. Fanny packs are not ideal as they are not as supportive as backpacks, but if you're only carrying a few things they may be easier to carry.
