Selecting a Walking Shoe

Walking is generally a great low-maintenance workout for beginners and enthusiasts alike.  One area of importance for all walkers is getting the right shoe for the activity.  Walking too often in ill-fitting shoes, or everyday shoes, can lead to foot and ankle pain and injury.  Below are some suggestions for selecting shoes.

Research Pays Off

Consider what type of walking you will be doing and how often.  Shoes made for hiking and walking on rough terrain are very different from walking shoes that are designed for treadmill and sidewalk terrains.

The Basics

Thewalkingsite.com recommends looking for a low, supportive heel that rounds in.  This design will help with the natural heel-strike to toe-roll rhythm of walking.   Many shoes designed for running have a flared, or wide heel which does not support walking movement.

Two more things to look for are a bendable toe area and a shoe that is lightweight and breathable.  Take both shoes out of the box and play around with them a bit while comparing to other walking shoes.

Shopping Tips

Try to go shopping during the time that you might often be walking -- this would help to determine if your feet are more swollen at certain times of the day.  And, aim to wear your walking socks so that you get the most correct fit.  Walk around the store for a few minutes, and if the store will let you, try to walk outside on the terrain that you will most often be using.

Wear the shoes for a few days around the house to 'wear them in' and get used to them.  In the instance that you find a pair that are really comfortable, then you may be good to go right out of the store.

Most recreational walkers need only to replace their shoes every six months.

Where to Go

Finally, head to a specialty store where the staff can help you with fit and selection.  Some brands are better than others for dealing with specific concerns.  People who are trained to fit shoes properly can be very helpful in steering you towards the right brands and styles.  The stores listed below are all located in Arlington and are great places to go to help get a customized shoe fit.
