2004 ARLINGTON RESIDENT SURVEY
A citizen satisfaction survey released in November, 2004 ranked the County "among the very best" in the nation in resident satisfaction with local government services. When compared to other communities its size, Arlington was rated significantly above average in all service areas. But what did the survey have to say about pedestrian issues?
Pedestrian Safety
When asked about issues relating to pedestrian safety, 60% of County residents said they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" by conditions within their own neighborhoods; 50% were satisfied with conditions in other areas of the County. But when asked which transportation areas were the most important to improve over the next two years, survey participants ranked their neighborhood concerns slightly about those in other areas of the County (30% v.s. 26%).
Sidewalks and Trails
Interestingly, a relatively large number of respondents (58%) said they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with the availability of sidewalks in the County. Yet at the same time, this issue ranked #1 among respondents as a transportation issue most in need of improvement over the next two years! And on a related topic, eighty-two percent were satisfied with walking and biking trails.
Street Lights
Seventy-eight percent of respondents felt that street lighting in commercial areas was adequate, and 71% were satisfied with the cleanliness of county streets and public areas.
When compared to other large communities, Arlington rated in the top 25% of all Public Works areas that were assessed on the survey.
