Sidewalk Closures

In this era of intense development along Arlington's transit corridors, having to cross streets to find usable sidewalks is not an uncommon experience. But the County wants to be sure it is at least a predictable experience that can be anticipated ahead of time, and that accommodations are made whenever possible to ensure a safe walking environment on at least one side of the street.

Policy

Arlington County policy specifies that any time a public sidewalk is to be closed for construction, then an alternate, fully accessible pedestrian route must be established. Clearly marked signs in advance of the construction must direct pedestrians to intersections with marked crosswalks where any exist. If there are no alternate pedestrian routes, the construction of a covered pedestrian walkway must occur if conditions permit its use. Also, a right-of -way permit detailing the pedestrian accommodation plan must be submitted by developers who are planning construction projects that will interrupt sidewalk usage.
